2025 Nobel Prize in Economics: innovation as an engine of transformation
The 2025 Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences recognized Joel Mokyr, Philippe Aghion, and Peter Howitt for their theoretical contributions on how innovation and the so-called “creative destruction” drive economic growth. Their research shows that technological progress is not a matter of chance, but the outcome of an ecosystem that combines solid institutions, incentive policies, a research culture, and openness to competition.
The award builds upon and modernizes the vision of Joseph A. Schumpeter, the Austrian-American economist who famously described capitalism as a process of “creative destruction” — a perpetual cycle in which innovation dismantles outdated structures and creates new opportunities for growth.
Thus, the prize underscores a fundamental insight for modern economies: sustainable growth depends on the capacity to innovate—and to allow the new to replace or improve the old. This renewal cycle, first conceptualized by Schumpeter and later formalized by the laureates, explains why societies that foster innovation sustain economic vitality over time.
The recognition also serves as a warning: factors such as protectionism, market concentration, and low investment in R&D can undermine the dynamism that innovation requires. For emerging economies like Brazil, strengthening innovation policies, technological education, and pro-competition regulation is essential to ensure global competitiveness.
In the context of digital and green transitions, this year’s Nobel Prize reinforces the importance of aligning business and legal strategies with the Schumpeterian logic of innovation—where creative destruction acts as both a driver of progress and a source of legal, social, and regulatory challenges. Firms that understand the value of intangible assets and know how to structure the creation, protection, and transfer of technology from a legal standpoint will be better positioned to thrive in an increasingly dynamic and competitive environment.
Our firm remains deeply engaged in the innovation ecosystem, closely monitoring the technological, economic, and regulatory developments that are shaping the future of business. We are committed to developing sophisticated legal solutions that integrate innovation, strategy, and legal certainty, supporting our clients in navigating this rapidly evolving landscape.
