Article “How to patent biological materials from 3D printing” for LSIPR

The article “How to patent biological materials from 3D printing,” written by our partner Priscila Kashiwabara and patent specialist Breno Souza, has been published in the “Life Sciences IP Review” magazine.

The text discusses the application of 3D printing, specifically the 3D bioprinting, in the field of medicine. The authors explore the challenges and possibilities related to the patentability of biological materials, such as tissues, cells, and parts of the human body, reproduced through 3D printing in Brazil.

A priori, animal organs and tissues are not considered eligible for protection under the Brazilian Industrial Property Law. However, the article discusses the patent possibility for biological materials due to bio-ink compositions, as well as the methods and the machinery associated. According to the authors, the composition containing cells and other ingredients is the key to secure IP protection for the “bio-ink” used to print new human tissues
