Brazil climbs five positions and reaches Top 50 in WIPO’S Global Innovation Index 2023 Ranking

The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) has just published this year’s edition of its Global Innovation Index (GII). Among the 132 economies included in the overall innovation ranking, Brazil came 49th and finally reached the top spot in the Latin America and the Caribbean region, a position previously held by Chile.

The five positions jump from GII 2022 did not come as a surprise, as Brazil also ranks fourth among the countries with the greatest progression in the ranking over the last four years, only behind the Republic of Mauritius, Indonesia, and Saudi Arabia. This year’s progress also represents the third time Brazil kept the performance above expectation for its level of development (Upper middle-income group).

This edition’s result also shows impressive achievements for specific indexes, such as for Intangible Assets, in which Brazil now occupies the 31st position. Brazil also leads the Latin America and the Caribbean region for Business sophistication (39th) and Knowledge and technology outputs (52nd), highlighting the innovation-driven growth of recent times.

As for the general results of GII 2023, Switzerland ranks first for the 13th year, followed by Sweden, United States, United Kingdom, and Singapore. Regarding science and technology (S&T) clusters, Tokyo–Yokohama (Japan) continues to lead the global ranking and São Paulo remains the sole top 100 S&T cluster in Latin America. Moreover, for the first time, China is the economy that has the highest number of clusters (24) ranked among the top 100, overtaking the United States, with 21 clusters.

Despite the significant challenges of recent times, this edition’s findings describe an innovation environment that is full of novel opportunities in diverse fields, such as artificial intelligence, quantum computing, genome sequencing, green technologies and robotics. As such, investments in these innovation opportunities will be necessary for countries to recover from the last recent years of supply chain disruption, high inflation and armed conflict.

Quite fittingly, GII 2023’s theme was “Innovation in the face of uncertainty”. Thus, this positive showing represents the Brazilian innovation ecosystem’s resilience and potential for further development.
