Launch of the Brazil’s Green Seal Program for Certification of Sustainable Products and Services

Last Tuesday, June 18, 2024, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva established the Brazil’s Green Seal Program through Decree 12.063/2024. The initiative aims to create a national strategy for the standardization and certification of Brazilian products and services that meet sustainable requirements, to be defined by the Brazilian Association of Technical Standards (Associação Brasileira de Normas Técnicas/ABNT). Criteria that may be included are production traceability, carbon footprint, solid waste, and energy efficiency.

Coordinated by the Ministry of Development, Industry, Commerce, and Services (Ministério do Desenvolvimento, Indústria, Comércio e Serviços/MDIC), the program aims to improve the quality of Brazilian products and services, increase sustainability in production chains, and enhance competitiveness in the domestic and international markets. With the establishment of the voluntary Selo Verde Brasil, the country is demonstrating that it continues to invest in the strategy of developing products and services with a lower socio-environmental impact, to strengthen the green economy, encourage innovation and the circular economy, as well as broaden access and increase the attractiveness of international players and markets.

Selo Verde Brasil will be developed in accordance with national and international standards, ensuring reciprocity, regulatory cooperation, and mutual recognition with other countries. The first technical standard of the program is expected to be published by the first half of 2025.

The program will also offer technical assistance and training so that participating companies can adapt their production processes to the new sustainability criteria, with the support of the Brazilian Industrial Development Agency (Agência Brasileira de Desenvolvimento Industrial/ABDI) and the Brazilian Micro and Small Business Support Service (Serviço Brasileiro de Apoio às Micro e Pequenas Empresas/Sebrae).

The creation of the national strategy for the standardization and certification of Brazilian products and services that meet sustainable requirements and the future implementation of Selo Verde Brasil represent significant advances not only in the transparency and sustainability of the Brazilian market but also in opening doors to new international markets, contributing to innovation and the global green economy.
